Olé Olá Red Blend, Bergdolt-Reif & Nett
This is unusual. In a good way. A Bordeaux blend of Cabernets and Merlot from our friends in the Pfalz. Cabernets, plural? Yes, Cabernet Sauvignon, to be sure, but also a little of each of two rarer Cabernets – Mitos and Cubin.
It’s lighter than most punchy modern Bordeaux, but still shows classic aromas and flavours of a Cabernet/Merlot blend..
This wine is available exclusively in the UK from Rise & Vine.

Germany’s answer to a Bordeaux – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Mitos and Cabernet Cubin. The two lesser-known Cabernets – Mitos and Cubin – are both varietals developed in Germany about 50 years ago.
Cabernet Mitos was always assumed to be a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Blaufränkisch, but recent DNA testing has shown it in fact to be a blend of Blaufränkisch and Teinturier de Cher (a rarity in black grapes as it has red flesh, rather than white). It adds good tannins and bright juiciness to the blend.
Cabernet Cubin is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Blaufränkisch. It’s a particularly hardy variety suited to Germany’s cooler climate. As with the Cabernet Mitos, its tannins bring depth and body to the wine, promoting complexity during maturation
Lighter than modern Bordeaux due to its more northerly climate, this wine maybe gives us an insight into the clarets of earlier eras. Aromas of ripe berries, liquorice, chocolate and cigar boxes are joined by hints of pepper and aromas of bittersweet chocolate on the palate.
