Ribera del Duero
This is a more refined wine than it’s Crianza sibling, offering layers of complexity and a lasting finish. Clean, bright, intense cherry red colour developing to ruby. Complex, warm, vanilla and black fruits notes, cocoa on the background. Full flavoured, structured and very balanced. Very long woody, black fruit finish.
As with it’s more famous neighbour, Rioja, the grape of Ribera del Duero is Tempranillo. Here, in Portia’s Prima, it’s their best Tempranillo grapes grown at their Pago del Pino estate 750 metres above sea level. The altitude means that the grapes have a longer ripening season allowing tannins to mature and soften and the slightly cooler temperatures keep the fruit bright and clean.
Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, locking in that bright fruit freshness, and then malolactic fermentation takes place in new french oak barrels – where ‘grippy’ malic acid is softened by the action of lactic bacteria to creamier lactic acid. Portia Prima then ages for 15 months in the same oak barrels.
