‘Cañada La Torre’ Malvasia, Bodegas Murviedro

Malvasia (or Malvasia Fina to give it full recognition) is one of those less well-known grape varieties… one of those unsung heroes… that we like to celebrate at Rise & Vine.

Best known as Boal on Madeira where it is one of the principal grapes for making the famous sweet wine of the island, this wine from the hills behind Valencia is fermented dry – turning all the sugars to alcohol – to create a wine that’s perfumed, textural, herbaceous, and dry as you like.

A wine with heady, nectar like aromatics of orange zest and blossom, apricots, and tangerine cream. We smelt jasmine and peach on the nose.  On the palate, there’s a clean, crisp, astringent start with vegetable green bell pepper notes, which opens up through tart, almost green, peach and almond flavours before smoothing out for a mineral, slightly salty finish.

The grapes come from a single 2ha parcel of organically grown vines, surrounded by almond and oak trees, at an altitude of 1090m to the west of Valencia.  After harvest, the grapes are given a 12 hour cold maceration to lock in the fresh, fruit flavours before fermentation in steel tanks (again for freshness) and 4 months maturation in 5,000l oak vats (for smoothness).

Sustainable production encompasses farming and production methods committed to minimising use of additional chemicals in the vineyard and the winery. In French it's often called l'agriculture raisonnée - reasonable agriculture - where producers try and stay as green / organic / low intervention as possible, but reserve the option to use minimal chemical intervention as a final resort. (These guys do only grow 1 crop a year, remember, and should a bad out break of mildew occur, then they might need to fall back on a spraying of copper sulphate, for example - a technique used since the 19th Century.)

Bodegas Murviedro champion sustainable viticulture and oenology. Many of their vineyards are grown organically using biodynamic techniques, as well as production and ageing methods that are as environmentally friendly as possible. They use modern filtration systems to minimise water waste, and they recycle all glass and cardboard used at the winery to ensure that impact on the environment is kept to a minimum.
