Duvel Distilled 2023

This spirit is, de facto, a whisky, but cannot be called one, as the base beer from which it is brewed is not any old distillery mash, but is the iconic Duvel ale itself (and whiskies are not made from hopped mash – mash being the base beer from which whiskies are dsitilled).

So Duvel ale is fired in copper stills and then double distilled before aging in oak barrels specially selected for the occasion: ten years in bourbon and sherry casks followed by finishing in Sicilian Marsala barrels.

The Marsala barrels add spicy aromas of vanilla and cloves to notes of cherry, apricot and raisin as well as, of course, hints of the original Duvel ale still evident after 10 years of aging.

The attention to detail in the brewing, distilling and maturing even follows through into the packaging – the distinctive bottle being modelled on an inverted Duvel ‘tulip’ glass, its round bottom sits in a bespoke golden stand.
