‘La Tartufaia’ Barolo. Giulia Negri

As seen on Stanley Tucci’s ‘Searching for Italy’…

We spent years searching for our perfect Barolo and were so excited when we finally found this beauty. Don’t just take our word for it. Decanter love it too. And so does Stanley!

Ruby red in colour the aroma is very rich, ranging from fresh prunes, towards spices and finally reaching the notes of minerals and flowers, such as violets and roses. The taste is fresh, intense and long with rich and smooth tannins.

“La Tartufaia” is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes sourced from two separate vineyards – Brunate and Serradenari, on the truffle woods clad slopes of the Serradenari hill, the highest point in Barolo which contributes to the finesse of this wine.

Giulia Negri is known as ‘Barologirl’ in her neck of the (truffle) woods because of her reputation for not just resting on the traditions of centuries of viticulture and winemaking that she inherits from the Barolo dynasty from which she descends, but also for travelling to other wine regions (she’s particularly enamoured by Burgundy), for exchanging new ideas with innovative winemakers and for daring to experiment.

Barolo is a challenge.

(It ain't cheap. Let's agree on that. There are a few sub £30 wines out there, but we've yet to taste a good one and believe you me, if we did we'd get it in like a shot.)

So if it ain't cheap, it should be good right? Well, you'd be amazed at the number of eye-wateringly expensive / eye-wateringly acidic / eye-wateringly bitter / eye-wateringly bland (we could go on) Barolos that we tried before finding this one. But this one... this one's the real deal!

And it ain't heavy.

People often ask us for a "big Italian red like a Barolo". But Barolo is not a big wine, Barolo is a fine wine. And that's an important differentiator; finesse: It should balance lightness and power, acidity and depth, vibrancy and complexity. And this is a wine that does all of that in spades. It took a lot of searching, but at last we've found our Barolo happy place. We're sure you're going to agree.

"A high-flying, elegant, chiselled wine." Decanter
