A Peu Prés, Sauvignon Blanc

When they drew up the boundaries for Pouilly Fumé, this parcel of land was missed out on the big name alotted to the parcels next door.  So it’s almost – “à peu prés” in French – a Pouilly Fumé.  But it’s a lot more affordable.

Pouilly-Fumé in all but name…  When the Appelation Pouilly Fumé terroir was being classified, the vignerons at the time chose to save a few francs by not paying for all of the land that could be classified to be so.  Oops!  Not under cultivation with vines at the time, so unlike the parcels immediately next to it, this parcel was never designated as AOP Pouilly Fumé.  Same land, same geology, same weather, just no high falluting name to slap on it!

There’s a flinty, citrus tang, and restrained gooseberry notes as well as a hint touch of smoke and salinity, but there’s just a little depth to it too, that rounds out those screw-your-face-up sharp edges that you’ll find in leser Sauvignons.
