Domaine de Montilles, Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds 2014

One of Volnay’s steepest slopes gives one of the commune’s very finest wines. The lieu-dit known as “Les Taillepieds” takes its name from its steep hill and the small, sharp gravel on which winegrowers “slashed their feet” while digging into the earth. It faces east and south on a mid-slope composed of light brown clay and lots of tiny gravel stones. Elegant and alluring with spiciness and minerality entwined with small flowers and lovely weight, this has beautiful depth and an enchanting, beguiling, mineral, pure, long finish. Domaine de Montille is one of Burgundy’s greatest estates. The wines are made for ageing but in recent years, since Hubert’s son Etienne has taken over, the Domaine has moved towards expressing greater aromatic potential in the wines. The Domaine has moved progressively towards organic and now biodynamic methods working in closer harmony with nature. The wines still benefit from ageing and develop an abundance of complexity as they mature.
