‘Finca El Serrano’ Monastrell, Bodegas Murviedro
Serrano wine? Isn’t ham ‘serrano’? Well serrano means of the sierra – of the mountains – and this wine’s from the mountains above the Spanish coastal city of Alicante and benefits from the baking heat of the region tempered by the joint cooling effects of the altitude it’s grown at and Mediterranean sea breezes. We love this one for its balance of power and freshness: deep damson and cigar flavours cut through with brighter cherry and menthol.

When we tasted this wine, we were wowed by its damson and deeply fragrant nose, followed by a lot of depth on the palate too, where earthy dark fruit and woody cigar notes are balanced beautifully by glints of sour cherry and clean menthol notes.
The importer told us of of ripe damson fruit with plum and strawberry compote, a drizzle of vanilla from the oak, and things kept feeling fresh, bright and clean. I guess we agreed.
Made from the grape known locally in Eastern Spain as Monastrell, but better known as Mourvedre or Mataro in the rest of the world, this wine is made from the fruit of a single 5ha vineyard in Alicante, warm enough to properly ripen these chunky tannins, but with enough cooling influence from the Mediterranean to stop things getting over cooked. Fermentation is clean and focused in steel vats, before being moved to oak foudres for 6 months maturing, where the oak plays its part but doesn’t overwhelm.

Sustainable production encompasses farming and production methods committed to minimising use of additional chemicals in the vineyard and the winery. In French it's often called l'agriculture raisonnée - reasonable agriculture - where producers try and stay as green / organic / low intervention as possible, but reserve the option to use minimal chemical intervention as a final resort. (These guys do only grow 1 crop a year, remember, and should a bad out break of mildew occur, then they might need to fall back on a spraying of copper sulphate, for example - a technique used since the 19th Century.)
Bodegas Murviedro champion sustainable viticulture and oenology. Many of their vineyards are grown organically using biodynamic techniques, as well as production and ageing methods that are as environmentally friendly as possible. They use modern filtration systems to minimise water waste, and they recycle all glass and cardboard used at the winery to ensure that impact on the environment is kept to a minimum.
