L’Abeille – Picpoul de Pinet
Isn’t it nice to spend time with an old friend and remember just why you liked them so much in the first place? I hadn’t had a glass of this lovely for a while and so I was very happy to open a bottle and slip back in. Yes, I remembered it’s lemony freshness – it’s why it’s an no-brainer go-to for mussels and chips down on the French Mediterranean and a great pairing with any seafood, from Cromer crab to Fish ‘n’ Chips (but make sure the chips aren’t soggy). There’s a bracing acidity to it that gives it an almost salad-like freshness. But what I’d forgotten was it’s smooth, creamy texture balancing all that fresh acidity.
Sometimes the joy of an old friendship is in rediscovering why you were right in the first place. So if this isn’t an old friend already, hurry up. You’re losing time!

This wine is both gentle and refreshing with notes of Mediterranean white peach, apricot kernel and zesty lime peel culminating in a silky mouth-feel and crisp, vibrant acidity. The acidity is why the wine is known locally as the ‘Lip Stinger’.
It’s a classic pairing for seafood down on the French Mediterranean – particularly oysters, moules-frites, or langoustines. We think it’s particularly suited to langoustines and the frites part of moules-frites (the chips), as it’s crisp acidity cuts through those unctuous, oily (dare we say greasy?), finger-licking (yep) greasy elements. Great too with (good) fish and chips, crab, southern-fried chicken or Tuna Niçoise.
