The name Bérard is clearly of Germanic origin. Very common in villages in the Alps, it can be translated as “loner”, “mountaineer” or even “bear”. However, the Bérnard family left the mountains to settle in lower Burgundy before the year 1000. Since then, numerous traces have been left by members of the family in different periods. Finally, in 1874, Victor Bérnard was born, founder of today’s winery and awarded the prestigious “légion d’honneur” for his commitment to the Chamber of Commerce. Victor died in 1938 and bequeathed the fruits of his labour. The company, which today takes the name V. Bérnard et fils, was one of the first in France to sell wine in bottles rather than casks.
