Perpetuity is a blend of malt whiskies named after Henry Douglas, ‘The Cursed Cooper of Leith’. Henry having been discovered skimming more than a little off the wine imported by the monks of St Anthony’s in the 15th Century, is cursed to make the same barrel for eternity, the barrel always falling apart at the last minute and Henry having to pick up the pieces and start all over again.
On a quiet night in Leith’s Kirkgate, it is said that a keen ear can discern the relentless hammer of Henry Douglas echoing across the cobbles.
Perpetuity, is a limited release, infinite blend Scotch whisky – one destined to develop and evolve in perpetuity. Unlike Henry’s eternally collapsing barrel, however, Perpetuity is anything but cursed. Quite the opposite, we’d argue.
This is the second batch of Perpetuity, taking the last casks of the first batch and blending them carefully with some exemplary casks of single grain and single malt Scotch whisky, which were then matured in a mix of PX, refill sherry and virgin oak casks to give big, malty and mouth-coating tropical energy full of grilled pineapple, cherry coke, nutmeg and blood orange marmalade on toast with cinnamon butter.
We can buy half of this second batch of Perpetuity (3,000 bottles), but the other half is destined to be the base for batch 3. In this way, complexity and character will evolve for perpetuity.
The Leith Export Company is dedicated to the use of sustainable products and practices in as many areas of their work as possible and to increasing them over the course of their evolution. The Port of Leith Distillery, distillers of the organic Lind & Lime gin and Port of Leith's future whisky range (Scotch malt whisky takes a long time to mature) - runs on 100% green energy, for example. They are working with a single farm just outside Edinburgh to source both local and organic grain, and their (beautiful) packaging is recycled/recyclable wherever practically possible.
